I think you should keep the pony tail because if there is going to be more battling, a pony tail fits better than pig tails and loops. Just what ever looks right for the occasion.

Maybe both, say the loops for social occasions and the ponytail for cross-country badassery. Would that be a bit difficult to manage? XD I'll save my vote for now.

I like the ponytail alot, but the pigtails are also nice! I gotta say I agree with ClefJ, because with somewhat alternating hairstyles (more practical one for the bush life, pigtails when being representative) one could subtly emphasize that the characters are aware of their surroundings.
